.
There are two types of Search Engine Optimisation, On Page and Off Page. Please see On Page Optimisation for more information on this. Off Page Optimisation involves building links from other websites. On Page Optimisation is like the foundations of a house and Off Page Optimisation is built upon this.
The two most important things when link building are firstly the relevance of the website that the incoming links are coming from and the Page Rank of the site. Page Rank is Google´s measure of the importance of a web page. Google Ranks every web page within it’s index with a score of 1 to 10. You can see the page rank of any page in Google´s index by installing the Google Toolbar and turning on the Page Rank feature.
A few years ago it was all the rage to offer a ´link exchange´ on your website and some companies still believe this is the be all and end all of Off Page Search Engine Optimisation. This is not the case, Reciprocal linking cancels out the benefit of linking, yes it can be used as part of the link building process maybe just to make you link profile look natural but I would not concentrate on it by any means.
Off Page Optimisation includes all types of link building including; text links, comments, blog posts, articles and directory submissions. It is always important to show a natural looking link profile to the search engines and good search engine optimisation companies will always provide a range of linking methods.
The times it takes for Search Engine Optimisation depends on the competition for your keywords. You can see the competition for any given keyword simply by typing it into Google and noting the number of websites available shown at the top right hand side of the screen. Typically we advise that it takes two to three months to see results and 6 months to get to the first page. This is not the case in very high competition areas however.
Unless your site is extremely well trusted and your niche has very low competition then on and off page optimisation will be required.
